Gimkit Flush Vocab Ch 1-10
Reflection from Reading Endorsement Vocabulary Assignment:
How did pre-teaching the vocabulary enhance students' understanding of the content standard? I chose these five vocabulary terms because when asked, the students did not know the definitions. We discussed them as a class and then played Gimkit. One of our content standards was, "ELAGSE6L4: Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 6 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies." Pre-teaching unknown vocabulary helps the students understand the content of the novel as we read.
How did the presentation of the content topic in the book build background and motivation for the standard? The vocabulary directly correlates with the storyline.
What would you change to make the lesson more effective? I would like to have found a clip (age and school appropriate) to show from a movie where there is a courtroom scene to help the students better understand the vocabulary.
How did this activity facilitate vocabulary development and conceptual understanding for the diverse students in your classroom? Unfortunately, the diversity came when a small number of the students knew the words well and have known someone who has been to court or gone to jail. I had to redirect the conversation to the novel! The more we talked about courtroom vocabulary, the more terms we came up with, even if they weren't in the book. This expands their knowledge of new vocabulary and its meaning.
